Does Medicaid transfer between states?

How long does it take to get Medicaid in a new state?

Federal rules allow the state up to 45 days, or 90 days when a disability decision is needed. Apply the week you arrive: the clock starts on your filing date, not your arrival date.

Can I get benefits from two states at the same time?

No. Receiving Medicaid from two states at once is a program violation that can create repayment debt. Close the old case, then open the new one.

Will I lose Medicaid if I move to a state that didn't expand it?

You may. In most non-expansion states, adults generally need to fit a category such as pregnancy, disability, age 65+, or caring for a child; income alone does not qualify them. Wisconsin did not adopt the ACA expansion but covers adults on income up to 100% of the federal poverty level. Check the destination state's page before you move.
